This absolute classic Iceland excursion is a must for any first time visitor to Iceland as it gives you the chance to see and experience some of Iceland's greatest natural phenomena. With a highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, youll learn about Icelands fascinating natural history as you make various stops along the Golden Circle (Iceland) route.
The first stop is
Thingvellir National Park, an area of great historical importance for Icelanders as parliament was founded here over 1000 years ago. You will be able to stand where Viking settlers proudly stood centuries ago. Gigantic rifts run through the park creating a stark and dramatic landscape. Gently moving tectonic plates run across
Thingvellir, pulling apart around 2cm a year making it possible to stand on two continents at once!?
Next is the geothermal area at
Haukadalur where you can walk through an area dotted with hot springs, steaming streams and geysers. Strokkur is one of the largest and most powerful and you can expect an eruption roughly every 5 minutes. Watch from a safe distance as the blue/green water bubbles up, suddenly spouting almost 30m into the air. Be patient with your camera and you will be sure to capture this amazing scene. Continue to explore the area, looking into bore holes but dont be tempted to touch the intensely blue water or you will be scalded!
At
Gullfoss, some say the queen of Icelandic waterfalls, marvel at the power of the water as it tumbles over two tiers before crashing 32m into an impressive ravine. Often with a rainbow in its clouds of mist and spray, you will never forget the sight and sound of the golden falls probably Icelands most famous.
After
Gullfoss, drive to Faxi, a small yet beautiful waterfall before contniuing to
Kerid, an impressive 3000 year old explosion crater. There is a blue-green lake at
Kerids centre which contrasts with the green moss-clad and colourful rock walls. From here, head back to Reykjavik after a day tour to remember.
